Over the summer, the Supreme Court said that Harvard and UNC using race as a factor in admissions was against the rules. This surprised Ivy League schools, including Yale. On December 14, 2023, 709 students applying early were happy to learn they got into Yale. They were chosen from 7,856 applicants, making the admission rate 9.02%, the lowest ever. Also, this time, Yale didn’t collect data on the race of the early applicants for the first time in a while.

1,531 candidates (20%) were moved to the Regular Decision group, and 5,537 students (70%) were not accepted. Before 2021, Yale followed a similar process to Harvard, putting more students into the deferred category than those directly denied admission. The numbers have since continued to diverge, with more students being denied admission while fewer are being deferred each year. Jeremiah Quinlan, the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale, explained to reporters from The Yale Daily News that this change in approach was based on the preferences of high school counsellors across the country, who wanted final decisions earlier in the process.
Yale Early Action Acceptance Rates Over 10+ Years
Last year, Yale accepted 10.89% of its Early Action applications for the Class of 2027. In comparison, they admitted 12.09% of the Class of 2026 and 10.5% of the Class of 2025. During the peak of the pandemic, the number of Early Action applicants hit record highs, mainly due to Yale’s policy of not requiring standardised tests.
These students might face challenges next year because Yale and many other top colleges might start asking for ACT or SAT scores in the next admissions cycle (though we think Yale and others will likely still allow students to apply without them).

Breakdown of the Yale Class of 2028 Admits
