Many schools are having a normal year picking new students, after a few tough years because of the Covid-19 sickness. But things are not normal for Harvard, as we’ve seen in the news. This summer, the big court said Harvard can’t pick students based on their race. And when Harvard told us who they picked early for the class starting in 2028, it was our first look at how this big decision changed things at this famous school.
Harvard said yes to 692 students out of 7,921 who applied early, so about 8.74% got in. This is the highest number of students they’ve said yes to early since the class that started in 2020, but it’s still one of the lowest times they’ve done this in their history.
Out of the students who didn’t get into Harvard’s Class of 2028 during the Early Action round, 83% were put on hold, and 7.7% were told no outright. We’ve criticised Harvard for putting so many students on hold, saying they should just say no instead of keeping them hanging!
Harvard Early Action Admissions Statistics Over 10+ Years
Last year, Harvard accepted 7.56% of the Early Action applications. They accepted 7.87% from the Class of 2026 and 7.4% from the Class of 2025. These really low acceptance rates for Early Action show that there were a lot more people applying during the pandemic, especially students who thought they were a shoo-in without SAT or ACT scores. Before that, for the Class of 2024 and earlier, more than 13% of applicants got in.
Here’s a summary of how many students got into Harvard early over the past 13 years:

Breakdown of the Harvard Class of 2028 Admits
Harvard didn’t give out info about the races of the students who got in early for the Class of 2028 like they usually do. Dean of Admissions William Fitzsimmons says they’ll get this info from students who decide to enroll by May 1st.
However, we can tell you that 53.1% of this year’s Early Action students who got in are female, while 46.9% are male. Among them, 15.5% are the first in their family to go to college, which is called first-generation college students.
Looking at where they’re from, 22.3% come from New England, 20.8% from the Mid-Atlantic, 17.2% from the West, 14.5% from the South, and 8.4% from the Midwest.
International students who were accepted make up 17% of Harvard’s Early Action admits this year. This is up by 3.1% from 14.1% last year for the Class of 2027 and by 4.4% from 12.6% admitted in 2021 for the Class of 2026.
