The University of Notre Dame mixes the reputation of a big science school with the Catholic values of a small spiritual group. Found just above South Bend, Indiana, Notre Dame was once closely linked with American Catholicism. Its fame for doing well in academics, sports, and faith has made it a top choice for religious education in the USA and globally. Notable alumni include Nobel Prize-winning biologist Eric Wieschaus, Senators Joe Donnelly and Jeffrey Chiesa, and TV personalities Sunny Hostin and Hannah Storm.
Notre Dame has around 8,900 students studying different subjects in six schools on a beautiful campus: the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Science, the School of Architecture, the College of Engineering, the Mendoza College of Business, and the Keough School of Global Affairs.
All students have to take basic courses in subjects like maths, science, social studies, and humanities. They also have to take a couple of classes focusing on Catholic ideas in the arts, two writing classes in their first year, and a special course in their first year.
Notre Dame was established in 1842, when the Catholic Church asked priest Edward Sorin to build a college on 524 acres of land in northern Indiana. In the late 1800s, under Thomas Walsh’s leadership, Notre Dame began efforts to attract writers and thinkers to campus.
In the early 1900s, there were debates about whether Notre Dame should focus on research like other top universities. Eventually, the leadership decided to make the change, growing the chemical engineering department, hiring more faculty, and increasing the number of students graduating from the campus.
Knute Rockne, a former student and coach of the Notre Dame football team in the early 1900s, is widely regarded as the best college football coach ever. His record of wins and his efforts to update the game are a source of pride for many at Notre Dame, showing the importance of sports on campus. The 1940 movie Knute Rockne, All American tells his remarkable story.
And, of course, the 1993 movie Rudy portrays the tale of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, whose journey from being an underdog to making it onto the Notre Dame football team is considered one of the greatest sports stories ever captured on film.
The soccer team has won at least eleven national championships (maybe more depending on how you count!), and all Fighting Irish teams play in Division I. Home games are a big deal on campus, starting with the marching band’s drumline and ending with a fun parade to the soccer stadium.
College dormitories are a key part of student life. They’re homes for students, along with Catholic supervisors and resident assistants. Students have to stay on campus for their first three years, and most stay in the same dorm for three to four years.
The university doesn’t have Greek organisations because of its Catholic values, but there are more than 400 student groups, covering areas like media, sports, faith, activism, and shared interests. While 80% of students are Catholic, there are also students of other religions on campus, with their own religious groups.
Notre Dame got 28,354 applications for the Class of 2027 and only accepted 12% of them. People who got in showed they were smart by finishing high school classes and writing a big extra essay. Notre Dame’s admissions office shared some facts about the new students, like 43% played varsity sports, 26% led big student groups, and 1 in 4 wanted to study business.
